Here are the usual things you hear about healthy color treated hair & the best shampoo for colored hair from every company and what’s wrong with it:

The secret to healthy, color-treated hair is to use gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners,
avoid heat styling tools,
and use a deep conditioning treatment regularly.

It’s also important to protect your hair from the sun and chlorine.

Additionally, regular trims can help prevent split ends and maintain the integrity of the hair.

It’s also important to be mindful of the color maintenance, by using color depositing shampoos and conditioners.

And most importantly, make sure you are using professional hair care product recommended by your hairstylist.

Well, that’s some nice GENERIC junk advice.

Let’s put some meat on those brittle BONES of
vague information from
the view of colorists for over 35 years in the salon.

The secret to healthy, color-treated hair is to use gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners… not always!
Some shampoos with sulfates should be used by the colorist to ensure all residual chemicals are OUT and OFF the hair before leaving the salon. From there, sulfate-free is “generally” a good idea, so long as it is NOT laced with salt….(it will make sense as you keep reading)!

Avoid heat styling tools… Yeah, right!  A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
It matters that you use products that depend on heat to infuse these powerful color locking conditioners!…without silicone or their nasty derivatives. (coming up soon…)

and use a deep conditioning treatment regularly….if you can find one with natural color optimizers that focus on the core of your hair while locking the color molecules at the same time.

It’s also important to protect your hair from the sun and chlorine….Sun can fade hair color for sure and chlorine is part of the bleaching process. But also, Sodium Chloride (salt) is in many shampoos because it’s a cheap way to make more lather. A well-hidden secret by big-brands and salon brands, too! So, remember, chlorine, chloride are hair color killers!

Additionally, regular trims can help prevent split ends and maintain the integrity of the hair….Yes…but you’ve got to find a haircutter that will only trim the last 1/16th of an inch each time if you plan on growing your length! Most cutters get their jollies on making hair shorter for the sake of making hair shorter. You know what we mean. Run from them.

It’s also important to be mindful of the color maintenance, by using color depositing shampoos and conditioners… This can be dangerous. Though direct pigments are typically used in these shampoos, it’s not always true, and direct pigments are not all tested for long-term safety as they get onto your scalp, which can absorb toxic chemicals.
PLUS, finding the perfect direct pigments to match your hair color is generally impossible!
Better to treat the color properly than trying to add more wildly unpredictable pigments!

And most importantly, make sure you are using professional hair care product recommended by your hairstylist….Not necessarily. Stylists get products from their sales reps. Sales reps for the salon version are pumping out basically the same base formulas as the sales reps for the drugstore version.
Silicone base, salted for lather, they add different concentrations, change fragrances, and certainly dress up the packaging to make the prices look right…
even though they are overpriced for all categories to ensure their profits at your expense.

All the above is just a small part of the picture!

It’s a jungle out there.
