Intro to Fine Hair vs Thin Hair

Fine hair can be quite challenging when you want more volume that lasts

Thin hair can have similar challenges.

Fine hair refers to that each strand is small vs. coarse hairs which are large strands.

Thin hair refers to that the amount of hairs growing from the scalp are less than average.

So this is especially important to know the difference when understanding what the situation actually is. It’s especially important when you are talking to your stylist, so that you and they are on the same page in the conversations…. that  thin hair can be less than average fine hairs, or less than average medium hairs or even less than average coarse hairs.

Either way, fine and thin hair tends to be more difficult to style, often falling flat and losing style memory.

It often responds as limp and lifeless. This often allows the scalp to show through easily

Since fine hair has a smaller hair shaft than coarse hair, it can become greasy more easily.

Because the fine hair has less “structure” to hold weight, even your own natural oil can be too heavy to stay full of body. Silicone based products can allow your natural oils to travel down the hair shaft faster than usual, thus looking oily faster. This is only ONE reason to stay away from silicone on fine hair.

Fine hair is more susceptible to breakage leading to split ends and easily damaged from heat styling tools.

With all of these challenges, we have some tips for you on
how to handle your fine hair.

How to Get GREAT Results with Fine Hair & Thin Hair

If you have fine or thin hair, there are several steps you can take to help manage and style it:

  1. Use a volumizing shampoo, conditioner, and styling products: Look for products specifically designed to add volume to fine hair. Be aware that many products rely on squeezing the moisture from the hair to make each strand more rigid.  These products can help to lift the hair and create the appearance of more volume. Unfortunately, breakage from dryness is common. Also, be certain they are free from hair follicle-clogging ingredients, like plastic, silicone, and its derivatives. Your goal is to keep as many hairs growing as possible if it is thinning.  Here’s a link to your free copy of the Silicone Derivative AVOID List.

  2. Avoid heavy products: Heavy styling products like waxes and pomades can weigh down fine hair and make it look limp. Instead, opt for lightweight products that can add volume. Again, be cautious of silicone based products as they might be light, but they clog follicles and lead to thinning.

  3. Use a wide-toothed comb: Fine hair can be more fragile than coarser hair, so it’s important to use a gentle touch when styling it. A wide-toothed comb can help to detangle hair without causing breakage.

  4. Blow-dry upside down: To add volume to fine hair, try blow-drying it upside down. This can help to lift the hair at the roots and create a more voluminous look. Once dry, wiggle the airflow at the root area quickly to emulate a wind-blown effect at the scalp and ensure all excess moisture is dried from your scalp. Only use the light to no heat setting on your dryer for this.

  5. Avoid over-washing: As mentioned earlier, fine hair can become greasy more quickly than coarser hair, but washing it too often can strip it of its natural oils and make it look flat. Try to go at least a day or two between washes. If you are getting oily faster than this, it’s due to pH issues and silicone coatings allowing your sebum to travel down the strand too quickly.

  6. Protect your hair from heat styling: Use a heat protectant spray before using heat styling tools like curling irons or straighteners. This can help to minimize damage and breakage. Never go higher than 400 degrees, though. Silicone heat protectants allow hotter than 400 and this is why ongoing dryness and breakage is a problem. You should set the temperature below 400, especially on flat irons as the temperature shoots past this when the plates clamp together!

  7. Get regular trims: Regular trims can help to prevent split ends and other damage that can make fine hair look unhealthy and limp.

Conclusion to Fine Hair vs Thin Hair

Remember, every person’s hair is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another.
It no longer has to be Fine hair vs Thin Hair…
It can be fine hair, thin hair, or fine thin hair that is going to the next level!

Experiment with different products and techniques until you find
the best for your fine and or thin hair.

Do pay special attention to products that contain plastic based ingredients or silicones, as these tend to choke follicles thus causing hair to be finer or complete hair loss over time.

Key words to stay away from in the ingredient lists, are words that include -acrylate, -poly, -cone, -sane and more.

Generally, the longer the name, the smaller the version of plastic, acrylate, or silicone derivative is present, and those smaller versions are more easily absorbed deep in the follicles thus causing dastardly long-term hair loss.

“I can see a complete difference in my hair texture since I started PerForm Gel. I had always stayed away from gels due to my fine hair, but this is amazing.” Rhonda R.

Smothered follicles can stop growing hair after repeated applications. Also, keep in mind that these ingredients are on your scalp all day and night, thus making their side-effects more catastrophic to your hair in the long run!
