What About Cooling Caps for Chemo
What Is It?
Scalp cooling consists of wearing a cold cap or ice pack on your head before, during, and after your chemo treatment.
People in Canada and Europe have been using cooling caps for chemo for many years.
Finally, in 2015 the US approved scalp cooling machines by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The theory behind cooling caps for chemo (scalp hypothermia) is that the cooling tightens up (constricts) the blood vessels in the scalp which is thought to reduce the amount of chemo that reaches the hair follicles. The cooling also decreases the activity of the rapidly dividing cells of hair follicles and makes them less desirable to chemo which targets rapidly dividing cells.
How Effective Are Cooling Caps for Chemo?
There are several factors to consider for the amount of hair you are left with after scalp cooling.
First, how healthy is your scalp and hair before you begin your chemo treatment which is VERY important.
Second, how thick is your hair before your treatments?
Lastly, what type and dose is your chemo treatment?
It’s normal to still see some hair shedding when using cooling caps for chemo.
As you continue to use cooling caps for chemo, during your chemo treatment the shedding may decrease.
In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 66% of women with breast cancer who utilized cooling caps for chemo DURING treatments saw 50% less hair loss than patients who didn’t utilize cooling caps for chemo.
Types of Cooling Caps for Chemo
There are two kinds of cooling caps for chemo.
One kind is customized for your head. It utilizes a hose that hooks up to a computer that circulates cold water through the cap during treatment.
The computer maintains the temperature of the cap at around 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
The other uses multiple caps that you’ll need to store in a dry ice cooler and rotate during your chemo treatments. Typically, every 15-30 minutes you’ll need to change caps. It’s helpful to have someone with you during your treatments to help you.
Preparing for Scalp Cooling Caps for Chemo
Here are some helpful tips to help you prepare for your scalp cooling treatments.

2. Use a soft bristle brush to brush your hair.
3. Avoid using heat styling tools to style your hair.
Another thing to consider, cooling caps can make you feel very cold so be sure to take warm clothes with you to your treatments. The beginning of the treatment may be uncomfortable while adjusting to the cool temperature.
Keep in mind that chemo is NOT the only enemy to your follicles.
Other medications must be taken into account.
