1. A Brief History of Postpartum Shedding

Postpartum hair loss is something that can be very distressing for many women. Of course, in the whirlwind of childbirth and all the excitement, love and life altering events, the best shampoo for Postpartum hair loss becomes quite an important thing!

Typically following the natural progression of shedding from pregnancy:

both increased shedding can ensue, yet usually within weeks after giving birth, increased thickness of the hair begins.
During this time-period, doing all the right things for your follicles are most important, to be sure that the follicles are properly nourished to avoid death of those follicles.

The loss of hair is almost completely normal, though most women will experience further shedding throughout the postpartum period.

While the majority of women will experience some degree of hair loss following childbirth (and generally it reaches a plateau about two weeks after birth), this exact timeline varies between women, depending on their health and overall body composition.

The timing is largely determined by the hormones released during pregnancy, which can influence each woman’s response to hormonal changes occurring in her body after childbirth.

As birth hormone levels drop over time postpartum, there are many potential causes for this hormonal change—including a decrease in levels of estrogen (which was produced by the placenta before birth), an increase in progesterone produced by your breasts as you nurse your baby, or both—and as a result, each woman’s needs are different, and each woman’s symptoms have different causes.

2. What Causes Hair Loss During Pregnancy?
On average we all shed between 80 to 100 hairs a day.
With estrogen levels increasing during pregnancy this number is less.
The rise in estrogen keeps hairs in the anagen (growth) phase of the hair growth cycle for longer than usual.
This is why hair often feels thicker and fuller when you’re expecting!
Once your baby is born, or breastfeeding is stopped, estrogen levels drop and return to normal.
This causes the majority of women to experience postpartum hair loss around 6 to 12 weeks later.
Hairs that were in the growth phase move all at once into the telogen (shedding) phase, creating substantial hair fall.

3. What Products Can Help Prevent Postpartum Shedding?
Many women experience a significant increase in hair loss following childbirth, known as postpartum shedding.
It may be noticeable in your hairbrush and hands when touching your hair, or even in the overall feel and look of your hair’s volume.
Distressing as it can be, know that it is normal.
Though the cause of dry, unmanageable hair is not yet clear, it can be minimized through proper products.
Hair loss can be prevented by choosing an appropriate shampoo that contains beneficial ingredients. These ingredients help maintain moisture in the scalp and therefore prevent excessive shedding.
More importantly, it is TANTAMOUNT that you not smother your follicles with conventional mass market or salon brand products with silicone or derivates, acrylates or dry shampoos that contain aluminum derivates (VERY COMMON!)

4. How to Deal with Postpartum Shedding
There is a common misconception that after childbirth, postpartum hair loss is a sign of weakness.
It is not.
Women who experience significant hair loss after giving birth appear to be those women who were breastfeeding for the first 3-4 months of their pregnancies.
So, if you are one of the women who experiences significant hair loss following childbirth, there are some options available to help you cope and diminish your symptoms.
1. Scalp Care
Our scalp is considered the gateway to healthy hair growth and as important as our skin care regime.
To keep your scalp clean (especially of silicone, dimethicone & cyclopentasiloxane, etc.) and well-balanced, is most important if you want your hair to grow back at least as good as it was.
Again, you need to be able to recognize silicones in the ingredient lists. With more than 50 false names to hide these hair killers, refer to the list we mentioned before.
So…….. if you didn’t print the avoid list, do it now!
Here’s the link AGAIN! Silicone AVOID list.

It’s important to cleanse your hair daily during this time to remove sebum, skin cells, dust, and debris of the day.
By the way, conventional sulfates, and even many sulfate free shampoos may harm the follicles, so beware! AND, organic or natural is NOT a guarantee of anything other than higher prices. More about that in other blogs, so be sure to get our newsletter.
Using a scalp brush is a great way to ensure the scalp is clear and stimulates micro-circulation to encourage hair growth.
2. Hair Care Products
Sulfate-free shampoos are some of the best out there, especially when it comes to postpartum hair loss. But as mentioned, the substitutes may not be the best, due to the addiction to lather. Also, NEVER use non-lathering products, either! We warned about those a decade before the non-lathering sensation that earned a class-action lawsuit for hair loss!
GrowOut Shampoo & Strengthener was created with specific hair growth compounds to tackle the problem of thinning, weakened hair. The GrowOut Shampoo & Strengthener improves the microcirculation scalp, boosts its oxygen consumption, and GENTLY stimulates the hair follicles to grow without essential oils!
It is perfectly safe for new mothers as it does not contain parabens, alcohols, hormones, or harsh chemicals….or phthalates, which are proven hormone disruptors, especially in boys, so don’t use fancy-brand on baby boy!
With regular use, GrowOut Shampoo & Strengthener can reduce postpartum and age-related hair loss. The aloe base alone with proteolytic natural aloe enzymes cleans dead scalp cells while soothing the hair follicles growth centers!
Also consider a leave-on scalp treatment, GrowOut Scalp Energizing Spray, to optimize scalp health and hair growth. Not just one “magic” growth ingredient but over 17 in that aloe base!
3. Be Gentle with Your Hair
To avoid additional shedding, be gentle while shampooing, brushing, and drying.
Avoid tight hairstyles, as they place too much tension on follicles.
If you have long hair, a low bun secured with a soft scrunchie is a great style because it allows the hair to lay in its natural position from the follicles.
Consider getting a silk or satin pillowcase for your pillow.
If you are about to give birth, gather all of these above things, so you can relax into mommy-hood….well at least a bit!
Prevention tips are equally as important as postpartum hair loss treatments.
