Are you tired of dealing with gray hair?
Do you wish there was a way to reverse it without resorting to hair dyes that irritate your skin or cause allergies?
Well, you’re not alone.
Many people are seeking a solution to the inevitable graying of hair that comes with aging.
And while there’s no miracle cure just yet, the good news is that researchers have been hard at work trying to find one.
As reported by Well + Good, Dr. Muneeb Shah, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that our hair color comes from melanocytes in the hair follicle.
Unfortunately, once those melanocytes are lost, they don’t typically come back.
But what if there was a way to stimulate these melanocytes and produce more pigment?
That’s precisely what researchers have been investigating for years.
One potential treatment that has shown promising results is alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH).
This peptide is the main ingredient in Scenesse, a prescription implant used to increase eumelanin in the skin, making it more tolerant to the sun and light for adults with sunlight sensitivity.
Interestingly, it’s also the main ingredient in Greyverse, a topical treatment that hasn’t yet hit the market or received FDA approval.
A study conducted in 2022 on a 25-year-old woman with premature gray hair found that after five months of using an α-MSH solution on her scalp, 90 percent of her grays turned black again.
This is an exciting result, but as with any medical treatment, safety is of paramount importance.
Dr. Marisa Garshick, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, cautions that more evidence is needed to support the use of α-MSH before it can be commercialized.
While we await the full clearance of α-MSH as a safe and effective treatment, there are other alternatives you can try.
Antioxidant hair products, like Arey, have been designed to delay graying by reducing oxidative stress on the hair, which can contribute to premature graying.
They function similarly to using vitamin C on your face as an antioxidant to protect against sun-induced aging.
Although they won’t prevent natural aging entirely, they can help delay the graying process.
Dr. Mona Gohara, a board-certified dermatologist in Hamden, Connecticut, believes that the possibility of reversing gray hair is very real. She draws a comparison to the advent of Botox and other neuromodulators, which we couldn’t have imagined 25 years ago.
Now, those tiny injections can make wrinkles vanish like magic.
Dr. Gohara believes that while the science for gray hair reversal exists, it simply needs some perfecting.
While we’re still on the journey towards a viable gray hair reversal treatment, many individuals resort to hair dyeing as a temporary solution.
Another horrifying thought:
Do we want to be stimulating our melanocytes?
Because melanocytes also contribute to melanoma (AKA skin cancer) as medical research is suggesting.
So all of the above comes with its own set of problems, as some dyes irritate the skin or cause allergies, particularly permanent hair dyes and stimulants to melanin may contribute to melanoma.
So, it’s understandable why so many are eagerly awaiting a safer and more effective option.
Until the day comes when a reliable and approved gray hair reversal treatment is available, Dr. Gohara humorously admits that she’ll be dyeing her hair every three weeks. It’s a reality many can relate to, as the desire to maintain a youthful appearance persists.
In the meantime, we can take comfort in the knowledge that researchers are actively exploring ways to stimulate melanocytes and rejuvenate our hair’s natural color.
As technology and medical science continue to progress, the day may not be too far off when we can wave goodbye to gray hair for good.
Until then, let’s do what we can to keep the vitality of each and every follicle in its natural utmost state, so that IF we find out that greying is only a matter of melanocyte malnutrition, you’ll have kept your hair color from graying for longer than expected!
