Intro to Vitamin D and Hair Falling Out After Pregnancy

Postpartum hair loss can be very stressful and worrisome for many women.

It’s normal to have increased shedding after giving birth, and shortly after to have increased thickness. The timing is largely determined by your hormone levels, and though it’s known that hair loss may happen, hair falling out after pregnancy can still be shocking!

Your doctor probably had you doing as many “right” things as possible. For example, pre-natal vitamins were probably part of the “right” things that were suggested. Your doctor’s commitment to you and your baby is of utmost importance. Of course, once delivered, most of the focus is on your “bundle of joy.” They don’t mean it, but sometimes, the focus on YOUR ongoing health gets a little less important, until you announce that you are ready to get pregnant again. Good, bad, true or NOT, it’s up to you to focus on your health replenishment.

Back to vitamins…. Pre-natal probably proved to you how important abundant and balanced nutrition is! Some say that during pregnancy, you are “eating for two.” More accurately, you are “nourishing for two!”

The signal of hair loss is just that. It is saying that the hair growth materials are less abundant at the same time that hormones are rebalancing. It’s kind of a sick joke, especially when you are experiencing so many life changes with your “bundle of joy.” New stresses, and then you start losing hair? Then more stress about losing hair, and more hair loss!  YIKES!

Though your body needs all kinds of nutrition, one that lacks tremendously for most women after pregnancy is Vitamin D.

Many don’t realize that vitamin D plays a critical role in hair growth.

Vitamin D metabolizes keratinocytes in the skin.

Keratinocytes are skin cells that process keratin, a protein in hair, nails, and skin.

When the body is deficient in vitamin D, then the keratinocytes in the hair follicles can’t regulate hair growth and the natural shedding process properly.

Next stop?

Slow hair growth, increased hair shedding, and hair thinning.

During this postpartum period, when you want and almost NEED to look good for pictures and all, doing all the right things for your follicles is most important.

It is super important also to ensure that the follicles are properly nourished to avoid the death of those follicles.

Everyone’s heard the stories from moms who say things like,
“I had great hair until my baby. It hasn’t grown back the same since.”

So, though there are many factors, here’s an easy way to get back on the road to your hair recovery!

Vitamin D Deficiency and Hair Falling Out After Pregnancy

Those with a deficiency in vitamin D may have no symptoms, or their symptoms may be nonspecific and change over time.

It’s important to note, that we are not medical professionals, so we don’t give any medical advice or make claims.*

Some symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency are changes in mood, including depression and anxiety, frequent fractures, slow wound healing, loss of bone density, muscle weakness, new or worsening high blood pressure, constant fatigue, chronic pain, infertility, decreased endurance, and hair loss.

A lack of sunlight or not eating enough foods containing vitamin D are the common causes of a deficiency.

Of course, those suffering from an underlying condition such as Crohn’s disease or Celiac disease may be deficient because they prevent the body from completely absorbing nutrients.

There are certain medications that cause the body to break down vitamin D before it can be used, so those medications may cause a deficiency in vitamin D. Some of those medications are antifungals, glucocorticoids, HIV medications, and anticonvulsants.

Supplementing with vitamin D supplements could help if you are lacking vitamin D.

Supplements come in various forms, so consult your doctor for options.

Some are taken daily, once a week, or once a month. Have your doctor do a blood test every few months to monitor your vitamin D levels when treating low levels.

Keep in mind that during pregnancy you are “nourishing for two,” and after pregnancy, imbalances are common. Now is the time to pay close attention to restore, rejuvenate….for your overall health…AND your hair growth!

If you don’t take command of things, hair falling out after pregnancy can be prolonged…and even permanent.

Conclusion to Vitamin D Deficiency and Hair Falling Out After Pregnancy

The best defense against hair loss is eating foods rich in vitamin D and spending 15-20 minutes outside per day.

The flesh of fatty fish (such as trout, salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and fish liver oils are among the best sources of vitamin D.

Adding a vitamin D supplement to your routine can help support your intake goal as well.

A lack of vitamin D can leave hair thin and brittle which requires gentle treatment so you don’t experience further hair loss and breakage.

To ensure you are growing your best hair possible, you must use gentle, natural, and nourishing hair care products. Make sure they are SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) free and chemical-free and nasties free.

AND most importantly, a Belegenza Natural Hair Care specialty is being FREE of silicones, parabens, gluten, petrolatum, paba, sulfates and more.

So be sure you avoid silicone and its dastardly derivatives that can seep down into the follicle to choke the hair growth and disrupt the anchoring molecules of the hair. Be sure to PRINT “12 Everyday Things Slowing Hair Growth: Thinning Hair Reversal” FREE info.
