The findings were intriguing:

  • Those who regularly used fish oil supplements without any signs of disease had a 13% higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation and a 5% greater risk of stroke.
  • Among those with cardiovascular disease at the start, regular use of fish oil supplements reduced the risk of progressing from atrial fibrillation to a heart attack by 15% and from heart failure to death by 9%.

What Does This Mean for Fish Oil Supplements?

These statistics raise important questions about whether or not fish oil supplements should be used, especially by healthy individuals. Researchers acknowledged limitations in the study, such as the lack of recorded dosage and formulation of fish oil, which experts suggest could be crucial factors.

Despite these findings, it’s concerning that this is not the first study to highlight potential risks, yet many people still take fish oil supplements daily.

A Note of Caution
